“As I have travelled throughout the world I see many places have adequate mosque facilities and many places that are in dire need for a masjid. I remember entering a derelict masjid in Malawi where I found a pig asleep in the masjid! We need to focus on refurbishing the existing mosques and filling the ones we have as well as finding where the real need for a masjid is before rushing to build a new mosque as many have done.”
– John Fontain
Many Muslims have their heart set on building a masjid because of the obvious reward, which is stated in the hadith when the Prophet (peace be upon him) said:
“Whoever builds a mosque for Allah, Allah will build for him likewise in Paradise.” [Bukhari & Muslim]
We must understand that Allah knows our intentions and that we would all love to build a masjid in order to obtain the reward of a house built for us in paradise, but we must be sure that the masjid we are building is needed and not rushed into. Building a masjid is also about building a community and Volunteer Sierra Leone supports the dawah work to build communities in Africa. When there is a need for a masjid or refurbishment of a masjid we work on getting the work done and work on making sure that the masjid will be teaching Islam according to the Quran and the Sunnah. Sometimes instead of a masjid a prayer room and dawah centre is a much more effective way to reach out to the communities in certain areas.
